The inspiration to provide project-based learning and encourage the next generation of built environment professionals has seen us paired up with The King Ecgbert School in Sheffield as part of the accredited learning programme, Design Engineer Construct (DEC) and supported by The Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors.

As part of the programme, Manufacturer Topcon has loaned surveying kits to schools containing the equipment and computer software which has allowed Year 12 students to experience the basics of land surveying from our Surveyor, Steven Pearson. Activities, such as surveying a classroom block, working with levelling equipment and producing sketch maps provided plenty of hands-on opportunity.

Students weren’t the only ones to gain an introduction to surveying, with teachers also provided with basic knowledge to continue to confidently support students back in the classroom, such as importing data and developing more employability skills.

With the industry-wide engineering skills shortage and young people’s limited understanding of the built environment, initiatives such as this provide an important link between academic learning and industry through gaining practical experience.
